Overview
Vanilla Minecraft can be lots of fun with friends on a dedicated server, allowing you and others to experience a peaceful adventure. However, some owners may want to add more entertaining features that’ll spice up the gameplay. This can be done through Spigot plugins, addons that implement new functionality to the server. One of these is called Curses, which introduces twenty seven abilities to apply on players. Whether you want them to take damage in water or remove their inventory privileges as a prank, there are tons of possibilities. Setting this up is easily done on our panel, as it only takes a few minutes. However, the process itself may be confusing to new owners. Due to this, we’ll walk you through the steps to setup and use the Curses plugin on your Minecraft server in this Apex Hosting guide.
How to Download
- Navigate to Curses on Spigot’s website.

Getting Started
As previously mentioned above, there are tons of entertaining abilities to impose on your players. These vastly range from reducing their damage by 90% to randomly giving items to them every thirty seconds. This can confuse or scare your friends, as they wouldn’t know what’s happening. Using Curses on your server will bring tons of fun and possibly trigger a prank war. However, there’s some important information to know before trying it out. For instance, the different kinds of abilities and their configuration. The subsections below will help you get started with this plugin.
Type of Curses
Remember, there are 27
abilities to apply on players. Fortunately, you can view all of them by using the /curses command in-game with operator privileges. Some of these may help users out more than others, such as always getting a diamond despite breaking its ore with fists. Although, the vast majority of curses will negatively affect players in wild ways. It’s best to try them all out, but we’ll show you some funny ones down below.
Applying this curse onto someone will take away their ability to mine any mineral ores. Imagine someone finds diamonds and attempts to break it, only to have it transform into a stone block. The utter confusion the player will feel would be entertaining to you and others, especially if the curse is kept a secret.
Another devious curse to try out is making a player take damage in water, forcing them to avoid it at all costs. If they’ve built on an island, then this would be extremely frustrating to manage. Although, everyone else would find it hilarious to know they cannot easily escape the ocean.
Being able to look in-game is crucial for any activity, so cursing player movements is one of the best ways to troll. This will force their perspective to spontaneously move around, looking in all directions. Users with this curse cannot do anything in the world, but it’ll be a fun time for onlookers.
Commands
Instead of being a server operator, you can install LuckPerms or another similar permissions manager to permit players to use Curses. There are only three commands to use, which are found below. Additionally, there’s one permission from them: curses.admin. It’s strongly recommended to avoid giving default players this ability to use the plugin.
Command | Description |
---|---|
/curses | Opens the main GUI menu for the plugin. |
/curses [player] | Opens the menu for a specific player. |
/curses reload | Reloads the entire plugin to apply recent config changes. |
Configuration
If you’re wanting to customize these curses, then tweaking their settings is required. Whether you’re changing chat messages or renaming specific abilities, these options allow you to do that and more. As for accessing it, you’ll have to use the FTP panel
to navigate through the files. The following steps below will guide you through this process and how to apply the edits.
- Navigate to the
FTP File Access
andLogin
with yourPassword
. - Afterward, proceed to enter the following pathway: …/plugins/Curses.
- Once inside of the folder, press
Edit
to the right of config.yml to reveal its contents. - Continue to make your desired changes, then click
Save
at the top. - Return to the main panel and
Restart
the server to apply the edits.
Common Issues
In some cases, the plugin will not load or fully work on the server. This can be caused by a variety of reasons, with an incorrect installation being a common experience. Ensure you’re using the correct Server Profile for this process, as each one will create a separate directory to store files. Additionally, double-check you’ve uploaded the JAR file into the plugins folder on a Spigot or Paper server. Once you’ve done all of this, Restart
from the main panel to begin loading Curses in-game.
Sometimes, owners who attempt to tweak the plugin’s settings will not have them work properly in-game. This can be caused by not Restarting
from the panel or using the /curses reload command. Otherwise, formatting issues could be the reason for the options not functioning. Make sure to keep the existing format for all the settings and their values to safely apply changes.
