Silverfish…small, buglike hostile mobs found in strongholds, igloo basements, and mountains. Or so they are described as such on the official Minecraft Wiki. These stone devils wreak havoc on the citizens of Minecraftia, all in the name of what? Strongholds? No, they really are just annoying little fishies that crawl on land and slap you in the big toe. Are they the land’s way of taking revenge on you for mining thousands of stone blocks? Are they spies of the Ender Dragon? This will be a culmination of everything and anything on Silverfish.
Silverfish are quite old. They were scheduled to be added around 1.7, with the texture being found in the game files but they didn’t make their appearance in the official release until a pre-release of version 1.8. Since then, there have been many updates and adjustments to where they can be found and how they function.
Silverfish are one of the only mobs without a real-life plushie made of them. How sad! This mob is based on actual Silverfish, which in real life is a small insect which was named after its light gray appearance and fish-like movement. Its scientific name is “Lepisma saccharina.”
Silverfish can be found in many ways. Usually, they’re found when breaking an ‘Infested’ block. This could be cobblestone, stone brick, or anything of the sort underground. The gimmick that makes these relatively weak creatures dangerous is that if you attack them, or they get a lick in, the rest of them hiding in the surrounding area will come out to play. You’ll soon find that your two silverfish have become a handful, and so on. Dozens of pricks to your flesh will end in your swift death. Morbid!
End portal rooms will always have a single Silverfish spawner. To make your life easier, I suggest just building a couple of blocks above it rather than picking a fight with the Silverfish it spawns. You don’t want to get into a needless battle before the big fight! Silverfish are recognized as arthropods, so that undesirable enchantment will do extra damage to them!
Silverfish are pretty cool arthropods that actually share a lot of similarities with their real-life counterparts. They have a different feel to them from every other mob, being a hive mind rather than a single enemy. They don’t necessarily induce unreal fear like a Creeper, but they make the Strongholds and other underground portions of Minecraft feel a little more lively. And for the unprepared adventurer who stumbles his way into one or two, he might have another thing coming!
