Overview
As you play on an Arma 3 dedicated server, there are many options to customize. Whether you add new vehicles, weapons, or gameplay scenarios, each server is completely unique. When this occurs, providing necessary information to each player can become tedious. Thankfully, Arma 3 allows you to customize the Message of the Day in order to give info to each player who joins the server. Whether you use this for a welcome message, linking to social media, or even a website, there are just as many unique opportunities to match each server. Editing the config files is streamlined with our Apex Hosting panel, so we have created this tutorial to help you get started.
Adjusting the MOTD
- Navigate to the Apex server panel, then stop the server.
- In the left-hand menu, enter the
Config Files
tab. - On the next page, locate and access the
Server Config
file. - Scroll down to the
Message of the Day (MOTD)
section. - Edit each of the lines to your liking, then press the
Save
button. - Afterwards, restart the server for your changes to take effect.
Formatting Information
When editing the server configs, it is important to retain the proper formatting to prevent errors and crashes, especially if you are adding additional lines. When making these adjustments, there are a few guidelines to follow:
- Each message should be on its own line.
- Every message should be within quotation marks.
- Aside from the last line, each message should have a comma after the closing quotation.
Changing the Interval
By default, the messages will appear one-by-one every 5 seconds after joining the server. This can be changed to an interval of your choosing. Whether you want to make the messages appear faster or only display one every minute, you can customize it however you want.
- Return to the
Server Config
settings from before. - Scroll down to the
motdInterval
section. - Change the number to whichever interval you desire (in seconds).
- Once changed, press
Save
, then restart the server once again.
In-Game Display
Once you log into your Arma 3 server, the configured MOTD should begin appearing in the bottom-left corner of your screen at your desired interval. Whether this is a welcome message, rules, or anything else, you each player will see it every time they log into the server.
Common Issues
The adjusted MOTD is not appearing:
In most cases, the adjusted MOTD should appear after making the changes to the file. If this is not happening, return to the config file and check to see if your changes are still there. Otherwise, make the changes once again and ensure you are pressing the Save button. Additionally, ensure you restart the server afterwards, otherwise the changes may not appear as intended.
The server is crashing after making adjustments:
If the server is crashing after changing the server config, there is most likely a formatting error. Return to the config file and check both the interval and motd for possible issues. In most cases, this is due to a missing comma, quotation mark, or improper space. An easier way to check for errors within the motd is to check the coloring, as any quotation marked text should be yellow. Once you have made the necessary adjustments, save and restart the server once more.
