Critters and Companions Mod
By Nathan Young
As you play Minecraft with friends, there’ll be many animals and creatures roaming around. Whether you encounter sheep or foxes, there are plenty of unique species in the game. However, this can be amplified by using Forge or Fabric mods to introduce new kinds. One of these is known as Critters and Companions, providing you with nine extra mobs in Minecraft. For instance, red pandas are now possible with this mod! Some of these critters give you special status effects, like luck from koi fish. There are a few other features from this mod, which doesn’t completely change the gameplay of your experience. This is due to Critters and Companions being a vanilla-friendly addon, meaning there’s hardly anything else besides new creatures. As for setting this up to play with friends, it’s extremely simple and easy to do. However, newcomers to the scene may be unfamiliar with the exact process. Due to this, we’ll show you how to install and use the Critters Companion mod on Minecraft in this Apex Hosting guide.

Getting Started with Critters and Companions
After joining the server, players may already see a new creature on the horizon or nearby their spawn point. There are many common biomes for these critters to appear, such as forests or rivers. Whether you find ferrets or sea bunnies, your world will be filled with more unique species. This diverse environment is a wonderful addition to vanilla Minecraft, as some of these mobs might actually be in the official game in the future. Regardless of this, you can begin exploring biomes to encounter all-new creatures. Alternatively, becoming an operator or enabling cheats provides you with an easier way to find them. Besides this, the subsections below will showcase all new critters for your convenience.
Getting started we’re introduced to our first category of animals, surface dwellers. These are only found in biomes throughout the world, with none of them located in rivers or oceans. Check them out below to see what’s out there in your Minecraft server.
The first animal on our list is a Ferret, these small critters are found in forests and will attack other tiny mobs. For example, a wild pack of them can be found fighting chickens. Their behaviors are similar to wolves, meaning their tameable furry beasts. Use raw rabbits to achieve this goal, which will transform them into an adorable pet that’ll help you hunt for food. These creatures can even dig up treasure, but only after being tamed.
Rather than four-legged creatures, you might encounter a Dragonfly over a river. These large insects are also tameable, requiring spider eyes for the process. Players can choose to even give them armor to help fight hostile mobs, only after being tamed. These are wonderful flying critters that can help your adventures in Minecraft. Keep in mind that these are only found hovering over rivers in the world, meaning they can appear in multiple locations.
Continuing on leads us to a Leaf Insect, small leafy creatures that only spawn in forests. There’s no way to tame or use them, but they dance to music. This means you can have a bunch of them around a jukebox to watch them vibe. These mobs in Minecraft aren’t too sought after, as they don’t provide too many uses compared to other creatures. Regardless, it’s always an enjoyable time watching these leaf insects dance around in your world.
Only found in jungles, Red Pandas will be sleeping all day until night time comes around. These cute animals are bred with bamboo and tamed with sweet berries. Once they’re your pet, they’ll scare away aggressive mobs from attacking you. This comes in handy when exploring caves or other dangerous areas in the Minecraft world. Otherwise, it’ll be lovely to have them roam your base due to their adorableness.
Uniquely located in any snow biome, Shima Enagas are small birds that are tameable with seeds. These add onto the desolate space of heavily snowed areas, as they’ll perch on or under trees. Sadly, there isn’t anything else for these critters. This means they aren’t too desirable from this mod, but nonetheless adds extra life to the environment. Fortunately, you can build habitats in your base to have a wonderful bird exhibit to enjoy.
Instead of surface-based creatures, players will also find a wide variety of sea dwellers. These range from otters to dumbo octopuses, meaning there’s a diverse life in the water. Whether you’re in a river or deep ocean, there’ll be new and exciting critters to discover.
While traveling with rivers in the world, you’ll be greeted by Otters in the water. These are furry medium-sized creatures that will attack fish and float on the water. If you’re fishing in these areas, then you might catch clams. Otters will open them up for pearls, which are used to craft a necklace. This is one of the unique materials to make, as it provides you with interesting effects. This makes otters an important animal in the Minecraft world with this mod.
Similar to the above creatures, Koi Fish are only found in rivers throughout the Minecraft world. These provide players with the Luck effect, only after a group of them forms. This can help you obtain better items while looting chests. Although, you’ll want to capture these creatures in a bucket to quickly obtain the status effect for that goal. Otherwise, make ponds at your base with these majestic fish.
Navigating through deep oceans may reveal a Dumbo Octopus, medium-sized creatures that can help prevent drowning. In other words, they’ll give players a temporary bubble helmet to save their lives. This is perfect for exploring the ocean, especially any nearby wrecked ships. Keep in mind that you can also capture these critters in a bucket, always having a chance to escape death just in case.
The last mob on our list is known as a Sea Bunny, small snail-like creatures that lurk at the bottom of oceans. These don’t do much, other than add extra life to the sea in Minecraft. Besides this, you can pick them up with buckets and use them in your base as pets. This comes in handy when personalizing your structures, especially if you’re trying to make habitats for lots of animals.
New Mob Spawns
Due to the number of new mobs added in Minecraft with the Critters and Companions mod, we’ve created a table below to help you find them all. Keep in mind that some creatures may be harder to discover than others, depending on their design. For example, a Red Panda is more challenging to encounter than a Ferret due to their spawnpoint.
|Ferret||Plains & Forests|
|Shima Enaga||Snowy Biomes|
|Dumbo Octopus||Deep Oceans|
As for the unique craftable items to create, there are two primary ones: Dragonfly Armor and a Pearl Necklace. The first one allows you to strengthen your dragonflies, while the second provides you with a few interesting status effects. For example, while wearing the item on your character, drowned zombies and guardians will detect you less. It’ll also increase your movement speed underwater, specifically while swimming around. This greatly helps any aquatic adventurer in Minecraft, making it a must-have along with other benefits from the mod.
In some cases, players may be unable to launch the game after going through the installation process. This happens when there’s a missing dependency like GeckoLib, while Fabric users may have forgotten about the Fabric API. Make sure to download everything accordingly, then try again to see if that fixes the situation. Remember, your mods must match the loader version selected for it. For instance, Forge 1.19.2 requires that specific game type for anything to work. The exact same concepts are applied to the server, as that can result in a failed connection. Ensure Forge or Fabric is selected from the Game File area, then upload the files and restart to see if that resolves the issue. If nothing appears to work, then consider reaching out to our Support Team so they can work with you to find a solution.
If you have multiple animal mods installed on Minecraft, then this could pose issues. For example, Critters and Companions might be incompatible with other similar addons that add animals to the game. We encourage you to only install this and remove the others to fix the problem. However, checking for these new creatures in your world is an important step for troubleshooting. We strongly recommend entering creative mode with cheats or operator permissions to see if you notice any new spawn eggs. If this isn’t the case, then the mod itself isn’t working properly on your Minecraft server or singleplayer world.
