Overview

As you play vanilla Minecraft, mining is a massive part of the experience to obtain necessary ores and advance your arsenal of tools. Over time, players may desire more of a challenge revolving around caves, such as trying to survive entirely underground. To build upon this, we have created the Apex Cave Block gametype, a server version that places the player in a cave with minimal starting items. By carving out your cave you will locate various ores, mob spawners, and more to create a large base akin to Skyblock. With Apex Hosting, installing Cave Block only requires a few clicks, so we have created this guide to assist you with getting started.

Preparation

When installing a preset gametype, we highly recommend performing a server reset beforehand. This will remove all files and prevent any conflicts that may cause crashes.

  1. Navigate to the Apex Server Panel, then stop the server.
  2. (Optional) Using FTP, back up any necessary files to your own computer.
Return to the main panel page, then select “Reset Server Files” in the left menu.
    Reset
  3. Check the box to reset all files, then proceed to the next prompt.
  4. When prompted, enter “reset” to confirm the removal of all server files.
    Resetting
  5. On the next popup, choose to restart the server later.

Installation

  1. Return to the Apex panel page.
  2. Scroll down to the “Game File” section, then open the dropdown menu.
    Version
  3. Locate and select “Cave Block” from the list.
  4. When prompted, choose to change the version and use the included world.
  5. Afterwards, restart the server to load up the Cave Block gametype.

Getting Started

Joining the Server

Lobby

Upon first joining the server, you will spawn into the underground lobby. Here you will find various holograms providing details on commands and gameplay.

Accessing the Shop

Shop

To the side of the main lobby, the server shop will be accessible. From rare blocks to stronger armor, almost anything can be purchased within the shop.

Selecting a Cave

Start

When you are ready to start your cave block adventure, use the “/cave” command and choose to start a default cave or a miner’s cave.

Default Cave – Here, you will start in an enclosed box with a chest, a tree, and a cow. This setup will be familiar for Skyblock players.

Miner’s Cave – With this cave, you will spawn into a mineshaft-like area with water, lava, and other blocks placed around the small space.

First Spawning in

Getting Started

Using the default cave as an example, you will only have access to a tree, a chest of items, and a single cow. Regardless of the cave type, break down the wood and create a wooden pickaxe.

Upgrading your Tools

Furnace

Ensure you replant any saplings you obtain, then begin to dig out the cave. Using the stone you collect, you can start by creating a furnace as well as crafting stone tools.

Making a Cobblestone Generator

Generator

Once you have your tools created, it’s time to think about creating a cobblestone generator* and an infinite water source. Within this gametype, the generator has the chance of creating different blocks, such as andesite and even gravel.

*Note: A cobblestone generator is created when flowing water moves into flowing lava. There are many ways to make this, however the following diagram is the easiest:

Purchasing Shop Items

Selling

Now that you have a decent amount of cobblestone, you can consider using /spawn to return to the lobby and visit the shop once again. Now you can sell the blocks from your inventory in order to gain in-game currency which is used in the server shop. Using this, you can consider purchasing other blocks, including iron ore or even diamonds to upgrade your tools.

Notable Player Commands

/cave - Access or create your cave on the server.
/cave info [Player] - Provides information on a player’s cave.
/cave settings - Adjust the settings for your cave.
/cave sethome - Sets the cave teleport point.
/cave controlpanel - Opens the server control panel.

Notable Admin Commands

/cbadmin tp [Player] [Player to TP] - Teleport to a player’s cave.
/cbadmin add [Owner] [Player] - Add a player to an owner’s team.
/cbadmin delete [Player] - Remove a player’s cave from the server.
/cb reload - Reloads the plugin.

Conclusion

With that, you should now know how to install and get started with the Cave Block pre-made gametype. As you continue to dig out your cave, you may want to consider planting the seeds, sugar cane, and cactus to create farms for each respective item. Using the items you obtain from the shop, you can expand your base to create more farms, place more saplings, and decorate to your liking. As you advance further and further, you will encounter mob spawners and even travel to the Nether and End to collect items that were previously inaccessible. With so much content hidden behind stone, only your dedication will limit what you can achieve in Cave Block.
