Installing Proximity Voice Chat

Simple Voice Chat is a proximity chat mod and plugin that allows you to chat with other nearby players without having to join a discord server or voice channel. This mod gives an extra level of immersion to the game and is a must have for any server. Here is our guide on how to install the mod and configure it to run properly on your server.

Download and Install Simple Voice Chat

You can download the mod/plugin from it’s CurseForge page, just be sure to get the version that fits your server. If you are using the Spigot plugin you will also need to download ProtocolLib before you can complete the installation.

Once you have the mod downloaded you can follow these instructions to get it up and running on your server:

  1. Go to your control panel and click on FTP File Access
  2. Log into the next page using your Control Panel password
  3. Click on the mods folder to open it. (If you are on Spigot/Paper, go to the plugins folder instead)
  4. Click on the upload button in the menu on the left side of the page and use the next screen to add the mod/plugin to your server. (Do the same for ProtocolLib if you are on Spigot/Paper)
  5. Restart the server for the installation to be completed

Spigot Note

Players will need to have Fabric, the Fabric API, and the mod installed on their PC to be able to use it on a spigot server. Otherwise it will not appear for them.

Client-side install

Once you have the mod or plugin installed on your server there isn’t any further configuration needed on your client. If you are using the mod instead of the plugin you will need to add it to your current modpack as you would normally. You will not need to do any kind of configuration on your PC. As long as the mod/plugin is installed and configured correctly on the server you are good to go!

Using the mod

Once Simple Voice Chat is installed and running, the controls to use it are fairly straightforward.

To activate the mod in-game all you have to do is press the Caps-Lock key. This key will activate the mod’s push-to-talk feature. Press the M key to mute yourself, and the N key to disable/enable the mod altogether. The H will also allow you to hide the different icons that appear in the bottom left corner of your screen. You can press the V key to open the mod settings and make any changes you need. From the menu you can adjust the volume of individual players or make changes to your microphone and speaker settings.

One nice feature of this mod is that you can create groups for yourself and your friends. This is particularly useful for minigames when you need to coordinate with your friends but want to maintain immersion. You can create a group pressing the G key. Type in a name for your group, then just click on the + to create it. From there you can add any players you like and their head will appear on the left side of your screen. Players that are not in your group will not be able to hear you or talk to you.

Conclusion

Proximity chat can be incredibly useful on any server for a variety of reasons. It can add an extra layer of immersion by allowing players to talk to each other normally when they are close to each other. It can also be used in team based minigames like Bedwars, or just to talk privately with your friend group. The versatility and availability of the mod makes it usable on just about every popular server type except vanilla. This is a popular addition that players will thoroughly enjoy if you do not have a Discord server, or just don’t want to use Discord for voice chat.
