In some cases, players may find it difficult to locate bastions in Minecraft. This is amplified by challenges in the Nether, as scary mobs and dangerous landscapes exist. Additionally, these large structures typically are buried completely or partially – making it that much harder to find. Fortunately, we’ve created this blog to show you the simplest and safest ways to locate bastions in Minecraft!
Bastions
Bastions are semi-randomly generated structures in the Nether. They appear as quadrants, which split the whole dimension. These are 432×432 blocks in Java Edition and 480×480 blocks in Bedrock Edition. Each region has a gap of four chunks on the southern and eastern edges where neither fortresses nor bastions can spawn.
Bastions look like ruins of different structures, and you can spot them because they’re made from a darker material called Blackstone.
General Tips for Java and Bedrock
Bastions spawn in almost all Nether biomes except for Basalt Deltas. They’re easiest to find in the Nether Wastes.
When searching for bastions, aim for a height between Y: 55 – 65, as this is where they most commonly appear. You don’t want to miss one just because you were a few blocks too high or low.
Like fortresses, bastions are more likely to spawn along the X-axis, so exploring the Nether along this axis is a good idea.
Java Edition
This method is specifically for PC users.
Before you start searching in the Nether, make sure your render distance and simulation distance are set to at least 20 chunks to use this method effectively.
Enter the Nether and press F3. Look for the “E” line, which shows the entities around you. Walk around and look for the second number to be between 80 and 130, indicating the entities in the vicinity.
Once you find a spot, reduce your field of view to the minimum.
Then, look around and check that the first number of “E” is between 20 and 30, showing the entities in front of you.
Walk in that direction, and you’re likely to find a bastion. There’s also a chance you might find a fortress.
