What a Valheim Server Password Does
A Valheim server password stops anyone who doesn’t know it from connecting to your world, so you can run a private server for friends or a screened community without individually whitelisting them. Type the password into the connection screen and the game lets you through. Get it wrong, and the server refuses the connection.
The password and your permitted list are separate access controls, not one system. A non-empty permitted list blocks any player who isn’t on it, even if that player enters the correct password. Leave the list empty and the password becomes your only gate; add names to it and both checks apply at once.
Apex saves one password for the whole server, regardless of platform. There’s no separate crossplay password field to fill in, so whatever you set here is what every player uses to connect.
How to Set a Valheim Server Password
- Log in to your Apex Panel, open Servers, and select your Valheim server to load the Server Overview page.
- Find the Valheim Password field, below the Valheim Server Name field.
- Click into the field and type the password you want players to use.
Saving and Restarting the Server
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save to store the new password.
- Restart the server to apply the new password: click Restart on the Server Overview page.
How to View or Change an Existing Password
The Valheim Password field sits next to two small icons: an eye and a copy icon. Click the eye icon to reveal the characters currently saved in the field, and click the copy icon to copy the exact password to your clipboard so you can paste it straight into the game’s connection prompt instead of retyping it.
To change the password, clear the field, type the new one, click Save, then Restart so the change takes effect.
Troubleshooting Password Issues
Wrong Password Error
A wrong password error usually means the password was typed incorrectly during setup, or the server hasn’t restarted since it changed. Click the eye icon to reveal the saved password and check it character by character. If it looks correct, restart the server and try connecting again. If the error persists, click the copy icon and paste the password directly into the game instead of typing it, which rules out a typo on your end.
Server Not Asking for a Password
If the server lets anyone in without prompting for a password, check that the Valheim Password field on the Server Overview page is filled in, saved, and that you have restarted the server since saving it. Fill in the field, click Save, restart the server, and connect again to confirm the prompt appears.
FAQ
Does a Valheim Server Password Work for Crossplay Players?
Yes. Apex only gives you one Valheim Password field to fill in, so there’s no separate crossplay password to configure. Whatever you save there is what every player uses to connect.
Will Players on My Permitted List Bypass the Password?
No. The permitted list and the password are independent checks. Being on the permitted list doesn’t excuse a player from entering the correct password, and a non-empty list still blocks anyone not on it even if they know that password.
