Overview
Fans of Portal from Valve may want to replicate their beloved game in Minecraft to have fun with friends. Alternatively, players might want more movement capabilities to escape from enemies or efficiently explore the world. Regardless of the reasoning, this is only achieved through using modifications. One of these is called Portal Gun, which is a straight forward Forge mod that allows you to craft a tool for summoning portals. However, you can also move around objects to help with building or to mess around with friends in Minecraft. These features come in handy when exploring cave systems or battling mobs, among other activities. Setting this up is quickly done on our panel, as it only takes a few minutes. Newcomers to the scene may not be familiar with our system, creating confusion about the installation process. Due to this, we’ve created this Apex Hosting guide to show you how to install and use the Portal Gun mod on your Minecraft server.
How to Download
- Navigate towards Portal Gun on CurseForge and click
Files
at the top. - Scroll down and locate your desired

Getting Started
Once you’ve joined the server, you’ll want to begin collecting basic resources to prepare for the creation of your portal gun. This process will take some time, as you need to gather rare materials. Once you’ve obtained enough items, making and using the tool is extremely simple. However, you might want to consider installing the JEI mod to help with crafting recipes. We’ll break down everything you need to know about the Portal Gun mod in the subsections below, along with how to use it properly. This also includes the unique channels for the tool, as each player has their own one to safely use it. Although, this changes if you enable cheats or become a server operator to forcibly spawn it in the game. Regardless, review the information below to get started.
Collecting Ender Pearls
The first activity to accomplish is gathering ender pearls from endermen in the world. Players will need to loot 8x of these items to create one portal gun, but more resources are needed too. The best way to achieve this is entering the End dimension and building a mob farm to quickly get ender pearls. Additionally, using the looting enchantment on your sword will increase your odds at item drops. Otherwise, continue searching for an enderman in the Minecraft world until you receive the required amount of resources.
Smelting Process
Once you’ve obtained enough ender pearls, begin smelting them in a furnace with any fuel source. This slowly transforms into ender pearl dust, which is used for creating another item for the portal gun. Do this until you receive 8x of them, but can be more depending on if you want multiple tools. Keep in mind that there’s no other way to obtain the dust items, meaning ender pearls are the only method for it.
Miniature Black Hole
One of the hardest parts of creating a portal gun is the required miniature black hole, as you must summon and slay the Wither for its nether star. After doing this, you can use all the ender pearl dust to make this important item. If you want multiple portal guns, then you need to kill several withers. It’ll take some time to complete this task, unless you use cheats to spawn it in the game.
In any case, keep in mind that miniature black holes are the last custom items you need for the portal gun.
Portal Gun Recipe
By the time you’ve crafted a miniature black hole, you should have the tools necessary to collect other rare items. These resources are needed to make your first portal gun, which includes 5x Iron Ingots, 1x Diamond, 2x Obsidian, and 1x Miniature Black Hole. After getting them, use them accordingly in the crafting table to receive the portal gun.
Do this for all the ones you want, then try them out in your Minecraft world. Remember, there are portal channels for each player on the server so none of them get mixed up.
Using Portals
After going through all the steps and making your portal gun, it’s time to start using it. This is a fairly straightforward process, as all you need to do is left
or right-click
while holding the tool to summon portals. The colors of these gateways vary, depending on the channel. Whether you want to play around with portals or use them strategically, there are many possibilities. Once cast, you and others can gaze into it for a real-time view on the other side. This means you can see yourself or anything else within the portal’s range.
For example, lining up two portals can allow you to endlessly walk forward. This can be a bit confusing at first but quickly becomes natural. Another example can include you falling down infinitely, which can be nauseating at times. These aren’t too practical but can be if used properly. For instance, players may want to have two portals transporting them from one low block level to a higher one.
This is primarily used in building or exploring large cave systems, among safely navigating the Nether dimension. Besides this, remember that you can move blocks around too. This is done by holding the portal gun and pressing G
on your keyboard, then right-clicking
to drop it.
For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of all controls for the portal gun down below. Review this information to quickly note down what’s possible with this tool.
Keybind | Description |
---|---|
Left-click | Ability to cast the first portal with the gun. |
Right-click | Ability to cast the second portal with the gun. |
Middle-click | Allows the player to zoom while holding the gun. |
R | Resets and removes all previously summoned portals. |
G | Ability to pick up any blocks and entities in Minecraft. |
Common Issues
If you’re unable to join the server after installing the mod, then double check you’ve also uploaded the iChunUtil dependency. Remember, this is required for Portal Gun to function properly in-game. Once you’ve confirmed this, restart the server and try again to see if that works. In cases where the situation persists, make sure you’ve selected Forge with the corresponding version in the Game File area of the panel. This is required to have any mod capabilities, making this important to complete. If you’re trying to use Portal Gun with other modifications, then there may be incompatibility resulting in a failed connection. We highly encourage you to make a new Server Profile and redo the installation to safely use the mod. If nothing seems to be working, consider contacting our Support Team so they can work with you to resolve the issue.
Remember, the iChunUtil dependency mod must be installed with Portal Gun so that everything works. Do this for your client with an applicable Forge build already configured, which should resolve this situation. Keep in mind that if the versions for the mods don’t match with the type you’re using, it won’t work. This means you have to double check you’ve downloaded everything on the same build, such as Minecraft Forge 1.12.2. However, you may need to allocate more memory to the launcher if nothing works out. Although, if you have any client-side modifications, some of them may be causing the situation. Clean installations are always suggested, meaning you have nothing else besides Portal Gun and iChunUtil.
An extremely common problem to have is lag while using portals in-game. This can be frustrating, as it can sometimes freeze your screen for a few seconds each time. Solving this isn’t really possible due to the mod and game’s design, but you can review the best optimizations to try out to see if that helps. Otherwise, trying to increase the server’s performance is another option to resolve the situation. Alternatively, you can contact Portal Gun’s developer to see if they can release a patch for it.
