Food! An essential part of any diet, food is the perfect foundation to sustain any Minecrafter on their journey. Whether you journey across dimensions, slay dragons, mine in deep caves, or just build dirt huts, you need to eat! And so, with this new lovely invention, you’ll be able to cook your food in the most efficient way possible. Today, we’re going to go over Smokers, how to make them, how you use them, and more. Let’s begin.
A Smoker is a type of furnace that cooks food items, similar to a furnace but twice as fast. It also serves as a butcher’s job site block. Smokers are basically upgraded furnaces for food, meaning they cannot smelt anything other than food.
But why would you want this block? As explained in our prior blog about another furnace variant, this block serves as the counterpart to Blast furnaces. Blast furnaces are also an upgraded version of the furnace that only smelts ores, but faster. Just like the Smoker. The Smoker is very cool, being a sort of specialized furnace. So, how exactly do you acquire this lovely tool? Like most workbench blocks, you need to craft it. You can technically find these in villages as a job block, but we’ll focus on crafting.
Since this is an upgraded version of the furnace, you’re going to need one of those. Other than that, you’ll simply need
In Java Edition, a Smoker can be ‘locked’ by setting its Lock tag using the /data command. If a Smoker’s Lock tag is not blank, the Smoker cannot be interacted with unless the player is holding an item with the same name as the Lock tag’s text. For example, to lock a Smoker at (0.64,0) so that the Smoker can’t be unlocked unless the player is holding an item named “Apex Key”, use /data merge block 0 64 0 {Lock: “Apex Key”}.
Also, by default, the GUI of a Smoker and every other workbench type block is labeled whatever the block is named. This means that the name can be customized by naming it in an anvil before placing it. Then, when using the block, you will see whatever you named the Smoker as the title of the block.
What exactly is a Smoker? Well, a Smoker (in real life) is a type of grill that is designed to smoke meat in a long, horizontal chamber placed alongside the heat source rather than directly above it. This makes adjusting the heat and replenishing the fuel much easier because you don’t need to move the food out of the way to add coals or wood to heat the source.
In Minecraft, the Smoker is functionally identical to a normal Furnace (lol) other than the name and design. In any case, it’s nice that they tried!
That’s pretty much it. The Smoker is a very unique block that has a pretty cool use, and it is a great part of any auto farm. In my opinion, it is the better half of the Blast furnace, since food is much more important than ores. If you’re looking for a vanilla solution to the not-so-common food smelting issue, this is the best thing for you. In any case, I hope you learned something new today, and have a great day!
