How to Change the Name of a Factorio Server

Overview

When owning a dedicated Factorio server, attracting and maintaining new players can be vital. This will allow the server to remain active and keep a social atmosphere as players work together. By default, your server may not stand out, leaving difficulty in finding your server in the public server list. Luckily, Factorio provides the ability to add a server name, which will make your server unique and stand out amongst the crowd. Whether you wish to have a serious naming scheme or simply have a name for yourself and friends, this is all possible at any time. With Apex Hosting, changing your server name is as simple as altering a text field, so we have created this tutorial to guide you through the setup process.
 

How to Change the Server Name

1. Navigate to the Apex Server Panel, then stop the server
2. In the left-hand menu, select the Customizations tab.
3. Locate the Server Name text field.
4. Here, enter the public server name you desire.
   
5. Once entered, return to the main panel page, then restart the server.
6. When the server is online, it will be available to locate under the set name.

In-Game Changes

Once the name has been configured in the panel, you will be able to see the changes in-game.

1. Launch the Factorio game on your computer.
2. From the main menu, select the Multiplayer option.
   
3. Here, visit the Browse Public Games menu.
4. Using the search icon in the top-right, search for your server’s name.
   
5. The name and other information will be available once the server is highlighted.

 
Once the server has been joined through any method, the server name may also appear on the main menu as part of the quick-join option, allowing players to easily see which server they will be connecting to.
 

Common Issues

The server name has not changed:
If the server name has no visible changes, return to the Apex Panel and ensure the name was entered into the correct field. Once this is done, restart the server to allow the changes to take effect. If you believe it still is not working, visit the Config Files option on the panel page in the left-hand menu. Here, open the file that has server-settings.json as the file name. Near the top, check the “name”: field and ensure your desired name is present. If so, your name has successfully been added to the server and should work upon a restart.

My server does not appear in the public games list:
This often occurs when the game has not been configured to appear online. To get started, visit the Factorio profile page, then log into an account. Here, press the Reveal button and copy the token characters. Visit the Apex Panel page, then visit the Customizations tab on the left-hand side. Here, paste the token string into the respective token field, as well as your Factorio username in its own field as well. Finally, change the Public Server option to Enabled, then restart the server, allowing the server to appear in the list.
